“I have no understanding as to why, when you’re 18 to even, let’s say 30, why you wouldn’t try to make what you’re passionate about work for you… If you go and become a lawyer or go to school and do all the things that everybody wants you to do, and don’t do the thing you really love, the real question isn’t what’s going to happen when you’re 23, 27, 31, 36. The question really becomes what’s going to happen when you’re 70 years old and you look back at your life and you’re like, ‘Why didn’t I try?’ There’s going to be a regret factor that I think a lot of times a guidance counselor or parent or teacher tend not to think about… They’re worried about your next ten years. I’m worried about your last ten years. And in those last ten years, you’re going to be thinking back… and realizing, ‘Why didn’t I go to Austin (or L.A. or Nashville… wherever you’re going)? Why didn’t I take a chance?’ and really regret that. And that - that tastes a lot worse than going for it, because that’s when you’re most alive.”

I can’t wait to Lean In, and start reading Sheryl’s new book: Lean In: Woman, Work and the Will to Lead, with my amazingly smart, creative and driven girlfriends, Amanda, Caitlin and Robin.

But, but, but, … there are still some compelling reasons why, echoing some of Sandberg’s supporters, I’d optimistically slide Lean In into my teenage daughter’s bookshelf. First of all, the final two chapters of the book are more hard-hitting, riskier, less worried about alienating those readers, like stay-at-home moms, who may not share Sandberg’s vision. Sandberg kicks off her final chapter by saying:

“For decades, we have focused on giving women the choice to work inside or outside the home. … But we have to ask ourselves if we have become so focused on supporting personal choices that we’re failing to encourage women to aspire to leadership.”

In her famous 2010 TED Talk on the dearth of female leadership, Sandberg sounds more like that: opinionated and challenging.

An amazing little 15-year old (Kelvin Doe) from Sierra Leone created his own radio station by searching trash cans for spare parts to make batteries, generators and transmitters. On his radio station, he distributes news and information to his community, and taps into his passion, DJ’ing under the name DJ Focus.

You can DONATE to help youth like him via Crowdwise, and the non profit: Innovate Solone. The Program promotes innovation and challenges Sierra Leonean youth to design the solutions to complex problems in their local and national communities.

If you are a resident of San Francisco, or have ever visited, you may have noticed hailing a cab here is errrr… ~~difficult~~ impossible. I always seem to notice the lack there of right when the warm sun (if we are lucky enough for it to peek out from the fog that day) goes down and the breezy bay wind sneaks in. Fear not though…another innovative start up has popped up in the city, and has taken strides to remedy our cab barren city with a new mobile app called Sidecar. One go around, and I am hooked!

So here’s the skinny…Sidecar is a ride share program that works iPhone and Androids to provide to a quick, easy and fun ride experience anywhere in the city. Drivers are verified and screened and are individuals just like you and me. You request a ride via your phone, are informed where the closest driver is, get picked up and have the option to leave a fair “donation” (a standard donation guide is provided). From there you rate your driver, he or she rates you and everybody wins! So what are you waiting for…jump on board today.
